thanks for your comment - We certainly recommend keeping the original tapes for as long as possible.
DVD uses a form of compression that reduces the video data considerably and while it usually does a very good job there is always the likelihood that technology will be improved in the future.
If the tape does deteriorate in the meantime you still have stopped the degradation process by transferring to a DVD.
